What it takes.
There's a famous endurance film called "What It Takes."
It's by the great Ironman athlete Peter Reid,
It details what it takes for him to achieve what he wants to achieve.
Lots of solitary training, strength training, eating clean, and recovery.
Famously, he would go to a cabin in the mountain for 12 weeks before the big race.
He would lock himself away, and just train, eat, and sleep.
Without getting too deep here, I think sales is very similar.
Sales is a skill. You learn a skill with two basic activities:
You learn the techniques, you repeat them.
That's pretty much the same for everything.
In sales, there are particular techniques we must learn:
• How to listen.
• How to build a process.
• How to do outreach.
• How to find leads.
• How to follow up quickly.
• How to be creative in the sales process.
• How to get over your fear of self-promotion.
Each of these is a skill.
It can be learned, it can be practiced.
And you can get really good at it.
Of course, there's the age-old question:
"Are some people just born salespeople?"
I think so.
I think some people are destined to be absolute killers at sales.
But I think almost anybody can learn to be good at it.
Because these skills are something that can be learned.
And of course there's the hack!
The hack, you ask? 😊
Of course! Cliché as it sounds, the hack is just to work harder than anybody else.
I see so many people doing 5 meetings a week.
or 10 leads a week.
or 1 post a week.
It's not enough, people.
You have to do hundreds of outreach a week.
Hundreds of emails a week.
You should be doing a minimum of 15 meetings a week.
Ideally 30 meetings a week.
The more outreach you do,
The more content you post,
The more emails you send.
The more that you tell your story,
The more people who notice you,
The more meetings you get,
The more practice you get at meetings,
The better you get at sales.
That's the hack. Work hard.
Sales is just like being great at endurance, which of course is something else I love.
Work hard, practice, and you will get better.
Get at it!
The Sell’s 13th Episode is out.
This week's episode is a special one.
If you regard just me and no guest special, then it's a special one. I write sales poetry. Yep, I know it's weird, but I do.
And I turn it into newsletters every week.
This podcast episode is me reading a selection of that poetry to you.
The idea is to give you some thoughts around sales, show how amazing sales can be, and hopefully shows you how much I love sales.
I really hope you enjoy it.
